Definitely not in a bad way, but when you realize that you were in the grips of being idiot teenagers and stressing about things over his birthday, then you need to make it up to him, you can't exactly spring the surprise seeing as he's been spending all day between appointments calling up fancy restaurants to see what he can do. He finally gets them a table for two at a nice place, but seeing as it's date number five, it's for Alex's birthday (to make up for it), and because he wants to ask Alex a big thing tonight, he wants it to be special.
He drops by the reception desk just before lunch and leans over to pick up a pen from Alex's station, scribbling the time and address, tapping it. "Meet me there at seven, okay?" he says, and leans in to steal a kiss from him before he drifts back, walking backwards so he doesn't have to miss a minute of looking at him. "Dress nicely."
That's all he gets out before he finishes his shift and heads out a little early, needing to go pick up his suit. He has the pieces of it, but he needs to pick up the grey waistcoat, the shoes, and the tie. He even books himself a little salon moment for his hair, and then hits the fancy Italian place at seven sharp with a new plant for Alex -- this one a succulent, to represent New Mexico.
It's finally date number five and all the cold showers have finally led up to this.
